Through time clay sinks and precipitates, in various territories revealing its unique material quality.

‘a Time’ is the theme of this exhibition. It indicates the life of clay; as time passes, the earth sinks and precipitates. It collects various minerals and elements through sedimentation and shows specific characteristics in different regions. It can be interpreted as “sometimes”, “once in a while” or reference a non-specific time frame, perhaps as a glimpse into an artist’s thoughts. In Ecclesiastes in the Bible states, “A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted”, referring to our demeanor toward the inconstancy and the unknown in our life, the reservation of the past, the affirmation of the present, and the aspiration towards the future.

Ceramicists manifest their imagination through the formation of clay. In this exhibition, the exhibitors attempt to articulate their interpretation and perception and open up a dialogue about ‘time’ through their creations with clay.

This exhibition represents a reflection of the past, a snapshot of a moment, and an interpretation of when a decision is made.

This is the first Ceramics exhibition presented as a retrospective, which relates to the happenings at the Academy of Visual Arts since its establishment 16 years ago. It presents 37 exhibitors, including 32 alumni and 5 teaching staff who have continued their ceramics practice. Exhibitors manifest their interpretation of time through clay, the showcased artworks communicate their thoughts and open up a dialogue.
